A Certificate in Journalism & Mass Communication is a program designed to provide students with introductory knowledge and skills in the field of journalism and mass communication. This certificate program typically covers a range of subjects related to media literacy, news writing, media ethics, and basic multimedia skills.
Media Literacy: Students learn about the role of media in society and develop critical thinking skills to analyze media messages. They gain an understanding of media ownership, bias, and the impact of media on individuals and communities.
News Writing: The program focuses on developing foundational news writing skills. Students learn the principles of journalistic writing, including news structure, inverted pyramid style, and accuracy. They gain skills in researching, interviewing, and writing news stories.
Media Ethics: Students explore ethical considerations in journalism and mass communication. They learn about media codes of conduct, professional standards, and the importance of accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in reporting. Students gain an understanding of the ethical challenges faced by journalists and media practitioners.
Multimedia Skills: The program introduces students to basic multimedia skills relevant to journalism and mass communication. Students learn to create and edit multimedia content, such as photos, videos, and audio recordings. They gain skills in using digital tools and software for basic media production.
Introduction to Mass Communication: Students study the fundamentals of mass communication, including theories, models, and effects of mass media. They gain insights into different forms of media, such as print, broadcast, and digital media. Students also explore the role of mass communication in shaping public opinion and society.
At least five (5) passes at “O” level including English language.

Basic Principles in Journalism is a course that provides students with an introduction to the principles and practices of journalism. Students will learn about the history of journalism, the role of journalism in society, and the ethical considerations of journalism. The course may cover topics such as news values, news gathering, and news writing.
JMC112 – Broadcast News Writing & Reporting (4CU):
Broadcast News Writing & Reporting is a course that focuses on developing skills in writing and reporting news for broadcast media. Students will learn about the principles and practices of broadcast journalism, including news gathering, writing, and editing. They will develop their skills in producing news stories for radio and television.
JMC113 – Radio & Television Broadcasting Skills (Theory) (4CU):
Radio & Television Broadcasting Skills (Theory) is a course that provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices of radio and television broadcasting. Students will learn about the technical aspects of broadcasting, including sound and video production, editing, and transmission. They will develop their skills in using broadcasting equipment and software.
JMC114 – Basic Techniques of Information Gathering (3CU):
Basic Techniques of Information Gathering is a course that focuses on developing skills in gathering and verifying information for journalistic purposes. Students will learn about the principles and practices of information gathering, including research, interviewing, and fact-checking. They will develop their skills in using various sources of information, such as databases, archives, and online resources.

Basic Principles of Communication in Journalism is a course that focuses on developing skills in communication for journalistic purposes. Students will learn about the principles and practices of effective communication, including verbal and nonverbal communication, active listening, and feedback. They will develop their skills in writing news stories, delivering presentations, and conducting interviews.
JMC121 – History of the Press in Uganda (3CU):
History of the Press in Uganda is a course that provides students with an overview of the development of the press in Uganda. Students will learn about the historical, social, and political factors that have shaped the press in Uganda. The course may cover topics such as the role of the press in Uganda’s independence struggle, the impact of censorship and media regulation, and the emergence of new media technologies.

JMC123 – Introduction to Writing for Print Media (4CU):
Introduction to Writing for Print Media is a course that focuses on developing skills in writing news stories for print media. Students will learn about the principles and practices of news writing, including news values, news gathering, and news writing styles. They will develop their skills in writing news stories for newspapers, magazines, and other print media.
JMC124 – Introduction to Radio Broadcasting Skills (Practical) (4CU):
Introduction to Radio Broadcasting Skills (Practical) is a course that provides students with practical skills in radio broadcasting. Students will learn about the technical aspects of radio broadcasting, including sound production, editing, and transmission. They will develop their skills in using radio broadcasting equipment and software, and producing radio programs.
COF140 – Computer Fundamentals (3CU):
Computer Fundamentals is a course that provides students with an introduction to the principles and concepts of computer technology. Students will learn about computer hardware, software, operating systems, and networking. They will develop their skills in using various computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. The course may also cover topics such as computer security, internet usage, and emerging technologies.
JMC131 – Public Affairs Reporting (3CU):
Public Affairs Reporting is a course that focuses on developing skills in reporting on public affairs. Students will learn about the principles and practices of public affairs reporting, including news gathering, writing, and editing. They will develop their skills in producing news stories on public affairs issues, such as politics, government, and social issues.
JMC132 – Introduction to Government, Media & Society (3CU):
Introduction to Government, Media & Society is a course that provides students with an understanding of the relationship between government, media, and society. Students will learn about the role of media in shaping public opinion, the impact of government policies on media, and the ethical considerations of media in a democratic society. The course may cover topics such as media ownership, media regulation, and media freedom.
JMC133 – Television Broadcasting Skills (Practical) (4CU):
Television Broadcasting Skills (Practical) is a course that provides students with practical skills in television broadcasting. Students will learn about the technical aspects of television broadcasting, including camera operation, sound production, editing, and transmission. They will develop their skills in using television broadcasting equipment and software, and producing television programs.
CSC113 – Computer Applications (3CU):
Computer Applications is a course that focuses on developing practical computer skills for journalism tasks. Students will learn about various computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. They will develop their skills in using these applications to create professional documents, manage data, and enhance productivity in a journalism setting.
JMC211 – Introduction to Media Law (4CU):
Introduction to Media Law is a course that provides students with an understanding of the legal framework that governs media operations. Students will learn about the principles and practices of media law, including libel, privacy, copyright, and freedom of speech. The course may cover topics such as media regulation, media ownership, and media ethics.
JMC212 – Speech and Language Skills (4CU):
Speech and Language Skills is a course that focuses on developing effective communication skills for journalism professionals. Students will learn about the principles and practices of effective communication, including verbal and nonverbal communication, active listening, and feedback. They will develop their skills in writing news stories, delivering presentations, and conducting interviews.
JMC213 – Special Project & Report Writing (3CU):
Special Project & Report Writing is a course that provides students with an opportunity to apply their journalism skills in a real-world project. Students will define, develop, research, and write or produce in electronic or visual form an individual project of serious merit. The project is intended to demonstrate the range of skills acquired during the student’s training in Journalism. The project should also demonstrate a high level of professionalism and ethical standards.
JMC214- Internship (4CU):
Internship is a course that provides students with practical work experience in a professional journalism environment. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, gaining valuable industry insights and networking opportunities. They will work under the supervision of professionals and contribute to real-world projects or tasks. The course may also involve reflective assignments and evaluations to assess the learning outcomes of the internship experience.
